MIYAMOTO NORIKO – New Romance
(1) Proper Synthpop…’Somewhere Over The Rainbow’…no, really!! Which is appropriately odd and the awful phonetic English just adds to the extreme oddness. MV 0/5 K 0/10 HNT 7/13. The arrangement is lovely and adds to the justification for not being a novelty (oh god. Novelty City Pop….doesn’t bear thinking about.) (2) Segue into the first proper song, and Yum Yum. More conventional City Pop (WHICH IS WHY WE’RE HERE, OF COURSE) but too lovely. Another segue into…Synthpop Bossa Nova! with dreamy-creamy vocals. OH WAIT!! It’s the same song! Progressive-ness!! MV 0/10 K 6/10 HNT 9/13. (3) Haunted Cabaret Gold Room Romantic. It just keeps being As Good. MV 2/5 HNT 9/13 K 6/10. There seems to be an abrupt change / transition theme here; I wonder if Haunted Ballroom / Ghostly Big Band could be a thing….ooh, it’s Synth-Accordion Argentinian Tago, not joking. MV 1/5 HNT 9/13 K 8/10. The mixture of organic and electronic is very effective. Now, a big Vince Clarke Middle-8 Progression. (5) Wobbly intro, now a proper tick-tock drum machine sultry vocal Euro-synth filth-monster. HNT 10/13 MV 1/5 K 4/10 (6) More proper synthpop, more DM than anything else, but dammit I can detect some hidden influence here that I can’t put my finger on. HNT 10/13 MV 1/5 K 7/13 (7) Very cheeky return to City Pop to make me happy and keep everything anchored, MV 1/5 HNT 9/13 K 4/10. What’s nice about all of this is that all the elements of city pop are all here but odd and skewed with different instruments….(8) Out Of Space but great. In SUM: What a WONDERFUL album. First Confirmed Classic.
