TOYAMA HITOMI – Sexy Robot

HNT 11/13 MV 4/5 K 6/10 Out of the box. The way of reading this, I think, is to expect the expected and not go looking for annoyances. And if we do that, we end up with….some lovely by-the-book City Pop…(2) On Schedule, doin’ the job. This album gives the impression of being aware that Hip-Hop exists. As to whether that’s a good thing….MV 4/5 HNT 9/13 K 5/10 I wonder…are the vox too far up front? (3) Interesting opening….AhA!! This is the famous one that everyone knows. Basically, it’s a good song, and I’m being self-aware and trying to understand what’s borderline-aggravating about it. MV 5/5 HNT 9/13 K 8/10. Gorgeous squelchy kbds too. (4) Oh Dear. The awful Phonetic English one….with some awful bloke…chop it up for samples. Oddly, the guitar solo works on this one…BUT MV 5/5 K 1/10 HNT 0/13. This is the ‘going undercover as a hooker scene’ one, basically. (5) And now the mellow one which does the job. MV 5/5 K 4/10 HNT 6/13. (6) Now the slow one. I think, the awful English is what’s really stopping me from enjoying this, because the music is absolutely lovely and I want the vocals to match, and Hitomi has a nice voice. And the wayward sexual aggression should really work in this context if….it didn’t sound so ick. K 7/10 MV 3/5 HNT 2/13 (7) ANOTHER Slow One? Really? And the funny thing….after the wild inclinations of Side 1, Side 2 has a headache and wants to talk about mortgage rates and wallpaper. Hitomi, I am very sorry. I’ll try harder with your other albums…
